The Lennox High School Orioles cruised to an impressive 50-0 victory over Canton in the quarterfinal football playoffs on Thursday, October 31. Dominating from the start, Lennox forced an early end to the game in the fourth quarter under the mercy rule.
The Orioles quickly established a lead with quarterback Boston Katzer connecting with Drake Mikkelsen for a six yard touchdown pass. Running back Ramsey Williams soon followed with a 20-yard touchdown run, and Tate Gerdes added another with a 20-yard rush, pushing the Orioles ahead 20-0 by the second quarter. Katzer kept the momentum going with a 48-yard touchdown pass to Gerdes, widening the lead to 27-0 by halftime.
The Orioles showed no signs of slowing down in the second half, with Williams finding the end zone twice more on 32- and 23-yard runs and converting a two-point play. A safety added two more points to Lennox’s lead before Katzer sealed the game with a five-yard rushing touchdown, bringing the final score to 50-0.
Lennox outplayed Canton across all fronts, out-gaining them 436 to 72 in total yards and leading with 22 first downs to Canton’s five. Katzer completed 10 of 15 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns, while Williams spearheaded the rushing attack with 94 yards and three touchdowns. Gerdes, too, contributed with 77 yards rushing and a touchdown, along with a 48-yard touchdown reception. Katzer rushed for 56 yards in the game.
Mikkelsen caught three passes for 54 yards and Layton Smith grabbed three passes for 47 yards. Williams also had three catches in the game for 47 yards.
On defense, Jevyn Lefers led with seven tackles, while Max Weeldreyer recorded two interceptions in the game. Nolyn Spielman had five tackles in the game.
With this victory, Lennox advances to the semi-finals, where they will meet Dell Rapids on Friday, November 8, at 7 p.m. The winner of this match-up will move on to the State Championship, set for November 16 at 12 noon.
