Orioles pick up wins during busy schedule

On Saturday, Apr. 5, the Lennox High School baseball team took on the Rapid City Christian Comets and came away with a 21-0 victory.
Cole Spieler collected three hits in five at-bats, including a double in the sixth inning, a double in the fourth, and a single in the third to help keep the Orioles’ offense hot. He recorded three RBIs in the game.
Lennox’s big inning came in the top of the sixth when they scored 12 runs. Talen Eich drew a walk, scoring a run; Spieler doubled to score two runs; Mason Reischl singled, scoring another run; Justin Butler singled, scoring one run; Jack Aasheim singled, scoring one run; Gabe Veurink singled, scoring one run; Jaxson Bittner drew a walk, scoring one run; Jackson Anacker singled, scoring one run; and Eich singled, scoring one run. An error in the inning also brought a run home.
On the mound for Lennox was Anacker, who pitched all six innings, allowing just two hits and recording nine strikeouts.
The Orioles faced off against the Comets again on Saturday in double-header action, once again earning the victory—this time 13-6. Lennox scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull away.
Once again, Spieler had three hits in the game—a single in the fifth, a single in the third, and a single in the seventh. Also recording hits were Sam Bambas with two and Reischl with two, along with Bittner, Eich, Butler, and Dane Winterboer with one each.
On the mound were Bittner, Veurink, Bambas, and Spieler. Bittner recorded four strikeouts while allowing two hits. Veurink recorded two strikeouts, allowing two hits and three runs. Spieler also recorded a strikeout.
On Sunday, Apr. 6, the Orioles took on Sturgis Brown and suffered an 8-5 loss. Lennox trailed 4-0 heading into the top of the fifth when they scored five runs to take the lead. But Sturgis Brown answered back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, going on to secure the win.
Veurink recorded two hits on the day, with Spieler, Eich, and Butler each collecting one. Aasheim and Logan VanHaden handled pitching duties. Aasheim allowed three hits and four runs while recording five strikeouts. VanHaden allowed six hits and four runs and recorded three strikeouts.
On Monday, Apr. 7, the Orioles hosted Sioux Falls Christian and lost 4-2. Lennox led 1-0 after the opening inning, but the Chargers scored two runs in the top of the second and two in the top of the third.
Anacker, Veurink, and Spieler each had two hits in the game. Eich added one. Reischl and Bambas were on the mound, each recording five strikeouts.
On Wednesday, Apr. 9, the Orioles took on Beresford but came up short once again, falling 4-2.
Beresford took a 3-1 lead after the opening inning. Lennox answered with one run in the top of the second but couldn’t get any more on the board. Eich had two hits in the game.
Spieler and Bittner were on the mound for the Orioles. Spieler recorded four strikeouts while allowing six hits and four runs. Bittner recorded four strikeouts, allowing zero hits and zero runs over two innings.
The Orioles bounced back with a 6-0 win over West Central on Friday, Apr. 11.
Lennox scored three runs in the top of the first inning thanks to three walks. The Orioles then added one run in the top of the fourth, fifth, and sixth to get the shutout win.
Anacker and Bittner each recorded a hit for the Orioles.
Anacker pitched five innings, allowing two hits and recording five strikeouts. Bambas pitched three innings and recorded one strikeout.
The Orioles will be at home on Wednesday, Apr. 16, when they take on the MVPCS Padres at 5:30 p.m. They will be at Flandreau on Monday, Apr. 21, and home again on Apr. 23 when they take on Canton.
