Orioles outlast Madison 36-28 in Friday night showdown

In an intense football matchup, the second-ranked Lennox High School Orioles triumphed over Madison with a 36-28 victory on Friday night, October 12, in Madison. The Orioles put up an impressive offensive performance, improving their season record to 6-1.

Lennox took an early lead with an 8-yard touchdown run by Tate Gerdes, but a failed two-point conversion left the score at 6-0. Madison quickly answered back with a 9-yard touchdown run, taking the lead 7-6 after a successful kick. The Orioles responded with a 63-yard touchdown pass from Boston Katzer to Drake Mikkelsen, the two converted the two-point attempt as well to regain the advantage, 14-7, by the end of the first quarter.

Madison kept it close, tying the game 14-14 in the second quarter with a 43-yard touchdown pass. However, Lennox regained the lead when quarterback Boston Katzer connected on a 15-yard touchdown pass to Layton Smith and the ensuing two-point conversion from Katzer to Talen Eich, making it 22-14 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Orioles extended their lead with another touchdown pass, this time a 4-yard connection from Katzer to Ramsey Williams, though they failed to convert the two-point attempt. Madison fired back with a 60-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, cutting the lead to 28-21.

As the fourth quarter began, Lennox’s offense sealed the win with a 10-yard touchdown run by Williams and a successful two-point conversion run by Katzer, pushing the score to 36-21. Madison fought until the end, adding a four-yard touchdown run, but Lennox’s defense held strong, securing the 36-28 victory.

The game was evenly matched, with both teams running a similar number of plays and achieving 21 first downs each. Lennox slightly outgained Madison in total yards, finishing with 411 compared to Madison’s 386.

Katzer led Lennox’s offense, completing 19 of 28 passes for 263 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. His longest pass of the night was a 63-yard touchdown strike. Katzer also rushed for 44 yards. 

Eich caught six passes for 76 yards. Williams three for 34, Chase Faulds three for 32, Smith two for 29 and Gerdes three for 13. 

Gerdes was Lennox’s leading rusher, gaining 73 yards on 21 carries, along with a touchdown. 

Ramsey Williams had a strong game, both offensively and defensively. He rushed for 23 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, while also leading the team with six tackles. Jevyn Lefers also recorded six tackles in the game. 

On defense, J. Lefers, T. Gerdes, and Max Weeldreyer each recorded a tackle for loss, while Braeden Harmelink snagged an interception.

The Orioles will host Tri-Valley on Friday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. The Lennox Oriole Pride Marching Band will perform at halftime. 

Lennox enters the game with a 6-1 record, while Tri-Valley sits at 3-4.
