The Lennox High School Orioles faced a challenging final regular season game on Thursday, Oct. 24, hosting the tough Dell Rapids Quarriers, who left with a 26-12 victory. The win brought both teams to an impressive 7-2 record to end the regular season.
Dell Rapids opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run, followed by two more touchdowns in the second quarter, bringing the score to 19-0. The Orioles fought back in the third quarter when quarterback Boston Katzer connected with Drake Mikkelsen on a 42-yard touchdown pass. Although their two-point conversion attempt fell short, Lennox narrowed the gap to 19-6.
In the fourth quarter, Katzer found Mikkelsen again for a 7-yard touchdown, closing in at 19-12 after another missed two-point conversion. However, Dell Rapids sealed the game with a 5-yard rushing touchdown, securing their 26-12 victory.
Statistically, Dell Rapids led in total yards, gaining 338 to Lennox’s 268, including a significant 209 rushing yards. Lennox excelled in the air, with Katzer throwing for 220 yards and two touchdowns but also recorded two interceptions. He completed 26 of his 36 pass attempts. Mikkelsen led the receiving corps with 87 yards and both touchdowns, while Talen Eich contributed 52 receiving yards. Layton Smith had five grabs for 30 yards, Ramsey Williams two for 25, Chase Faulds three for 18 and Tate Gerdes two for 11.
On the ground, Katzer rushed for 23 yards and Gerdes 21.
The Oriole defense worked hard, with Jevyn Lefers recording 14 tackles and Katzer securing an interception. J. Lefers and Williams each had a fumble recovery in the game. Max Weeldreyer finished the night with seven tackles, Emory Lefers six, and Tate Gerdes and Nolyn Spielman five each. The Orioles forced three turnovers in total.
Lennox will host Canton (4-5) in the first round of playoffs this Thursday, Oct. 31, with kick-off set for 7 p.m. Lennox previously defeated Canton 44-16 on Oct. 4,. The winner will advance to the semi-finals on Friday, Nov. 8.
