Orioles earn season opening win over Chamberlain


On Friday, Aug. 25 the Lennox High School football team opened their ‘23 season with a 42-26 victory over Chamberlain at home.

After watching Chamberlain get on the scoreboard first, Lennox answered back in the first quarter as Boston Katzer found Chase Faulds for the 30 yard touchdown. Porter Ihnen ran in the two-point conversion, to put the Orioles up 8-7.

Lennox scored again in the second quarter as Katzer connected with Faulds for the duos second touchdown of the night, this time on a 16 yard pass. The two point conversion failed, but Lennox found themselves up 14-7.

Before halftime, Chamberlain managed to score on a long 49 yard pass. The point after was successful, knotting the game up at 14-14.

After a halftime performance from the LHS Marching Band, the Orioles got right back to work as Katzer took the quarterback keeper 15 yards for the score. The two point conversion was successful, increasing Lennox’s lead to 22-14. Lennox scored again in the third to push their lead to 28-14.

Another long pass from Chamberlain, gave them a 79 yard score. The point after failed but brought them within eight points.

However, Lennox distanced themselves before quarter’s end as Katzer found Ihnen for the two yard score. The two-point conversion failed but Lennox had increased their lead to 14, 34-20.

In the fourth quarter, Katzer and Faulds connected for their third score of the night as Katzer found Faulds for the 26 yard score. The two-point conversion gave Lennox the 42-20 lead.

Chamberlain scored once more on an 81 yard pass but time had run out and Lennox captured the opening season 42-26 victory.

In the air, Katzer finished with 314 yards passing, completing 35 of 54 pass attempts. He threw four touchdown passes and had only one interception.

Leading the team on the ground was also Katzer who rushed for 56 yards on 11 attempts. Corbin Hanneman rushed for 38 yards on ten carries.

Katzer’s favorite target on the night was Ihnen who grabbed 13 receptions for 123 yards. Faulds caught seven passes for 96 yards and Drake Mikkelsen grabbed two for three yards.

Defensively, Talen Eich led the team in tackles with four on the night. Carter Benning had a strong game, recording three tackles and two sacks on the night. Nate Haar also had a sack in the game and three tackles. Ethan Larson had two tackles and an interception. Journey Noisy Hawk-Ellis had one sack and two tackles and Coyer Fergen had one tackle in the game. Tate Gerdes had a interception on the night.

The Orioles will take their 1-0 record on the road this Friday, Sept. 1 when they take on Vermillion at 7 p.m. The team will compete in the Black and Blue Bowl on Friday, Sept. 8 when they travel to Canton before hosting Custer in the 2023 Homecoming match-up on Sept. 15.
