Lincoln County breaks ground on $54.8 million Justice Center

The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners, along with members of the South Dakota Second Judicial Circuit, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Lincoln County Justice Center in Canton on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

As Lincoln County continues to grow, the need for additional courtroom space has become evident. The new Justice Center will eventually house all court operations for Lincoln County.

The 40-acre campus, located northwest of Highway 18 and North West Street in Canton, will address both civil and criminal actions within the county. The $54.8 million facility will include an arraignment hearing room on the ground floor, three courtrooms and a hearing room on the second floor, office space, and a jury assembly room.

There will also be empty shell space reserved for future expansion.

“The new Lincoln County Justice Center is not designed in a particular architectural style. To ensure a timeless design, the design team referenced traditional civic architectural elements such as a stair tower, a defined entry with a multi-story colonnade, and refined exterior and interior detailing. The exterior features an architectural precast envelope with neutral color tones to resemble natural stone, creating a sense of permanence. Natural wood and simulated wood elements are used on both the exterior and interior to add warmth to the building,” said Commissioner Chairman Jim Jibben.

The $54.8 million project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2026.
