On December 21, the Lennox High School girls’ basketball team faced Wagner and fell short in a 47-39 loss.
Lennox found themselves trailing early, 20-10, and although they outscored Wagner 23-12 in the fourth quarter, the comeback fell short.
“Wagner was a tough game in that when you look at the stats, we definitely had some positives. We took care of the ball, won the rebounding advantage, and took twice as many shots, but it ended up not being our night,” said head coach Adam Quail. “In future games, we need to find a way to finish possessions and get to the free throw line. Both Tori Gerdes and Bergan Musser brought energy and played well off the bench.”
Musser and Gerdes each contributed ten points to lead the team. Musser added two rebounds and one steal, while Gerdes recorded three rebounds, one assist, and three steals. Andie Peters finished with nine points, four rebounds, and three steals. Libby Kranz added four points, two rebounds, and three steals. Karlie Bosma chipped in four points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Gavyn Herlyn rounded out the scoring with two points, four assists, and one steal.
The team rebounded with an impressive 67-48 victory over Canton at home on January 2. Lennox built a 29-18 lead in the first half and maintained their dominance throughout the game.
Quail noted the team’s strong performance.
“So far, the Canton game has been one of our best. We took care of the ball, played unselfishly, and executed our defensive game plan. We need to be able to replicate our approach to the Canton game for future contests. Andie Peters and Karlie Bosma really shot the ball well, and Gavyn Herlyn had a great game collecting 10 assists and four rebounds,” Quail said.
Peters led the Orioles with 20 points, hitting six three-pointers and adding two rebounds. Bosma followed with 11 points, including three three-pointers, as well as five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Ryan Hanssen scored seven points, pulled down four rebounds, and recorded two assists and two steals. Kranz contributed six points, five rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Gerdes added four points and five rebounds. Mia Hanisch chipped in three points, one rebound, and one assist. Adie McVey, Musser, Herlyn, and Jayla DeCou each scored two points. McVey also had two rebounds, one assist, and two steals, while Musser added two rebounds and one assist. Herlyn led the team with 10 assists, four rebounds, and two steals.
On January 3, Lennox faced Mount Vernon-Plankinton and suffered another close loss, 39-33. Lennox trailed 22-12 at halftime but outscored Mount Vernon-Plankinton 12-7 in the third quarter. Despite their efforts, they couldn’t close the gap.
“MVP felt similar to the Wagner game in that we got plenty of good looks, took care of the ball, defended, and competed on the boards, but unfortunately couldn’t find a way to finish. I’m happy with how hard we competed, and I’m sure these close contests are only going to make us better by the season’s end,” said Quail.
Kranz led the team with nine points, seven rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Hanssen added eight points and one rebound. Peters contributed six points, one rebound, and one assist. Bosma recorded four points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Herlyn scored three points, grabbed six rebounds, and led the team with four assists and five steals. Hanisch added two points and one rebound, while Musser rounded out the scoring with one point, three rebounds, and four steals.
The Orioles will look to bounce back as they travel to Groton on Saturday, January 11, for a 1 p.m. game. They will return home on Tuesday, January 14, to take on Western Christian at 6:30 p.m. before hitting the road again on January 16 to face Vermillion.
