LHS girls’ basketball season set to begin Dec. 10

The Lennox High School girls basketball team is ready to tip off their 2024-25 season with a home game against Dakota Valley on Tuesday, December 10. Head Coach Adam Quail, entering his eighth year at Lennox, is optimistic about the team’s potential and eager to build on last year’s strong performance.

Last season, the Orioles wrapped up the 2023-24 season with an impressive 16-6 record, highlighted by key victories over state tournament teams Mount Vernon/Plankinton and Tea Area. Their postseason included a notable win against Dakota Valley before falling to eventual state champions Vermillion in the second round.

Assisting Quail this season will be Coach Kray Person, who also serves as the C-team coach and Coach Paul McVey, who also serves as the Junior Varsity coach.

Heading into this season, Quail highlighted the depth and versatility of his roster as key strengths.

“We should have a deep team, which will give us flexibility both offensively and defensively,” he explained. “Additionally, we return strong leadership and valuable experience from last year’s team which will be essential early in the season.”

However, injuries remain a concern, with a few players sidelined during the fall. Among the setbacks is the loss of Teagen Sturm, who suffered a season-ending injury in October.

The Orioles will also miss last year’s graduates Dani Highum, Carli Kuyper, and Ashlee Sweeter. Yet, the team is bolstered by the return of players Ryan Hanssen (Senior), Gavyn Herlyn (Senior), Andie Peters (Junior), and Karlie Bosma (Sophomore), all of whom contributed significantly last season.

“We also have an exciting group of newcomers who are ready to make an impact this season,” Quail noted.

Quail set ambitious goals for the Orioles, including winning the conference and earning a trip to the state tournament.

“In order to reach these goals we have to compete and get better each day in practice and to stay together as a team,” he emphasized.

The Orioles face tough competition from area contenders Sioux Falls Christian, Dakota Valley, Vermillion, and Elk Point-Jefferson.

Following their season opener against Dakota Valley, the Orioles hit the road to face Sioux Falls Christian on Friday, December 13, and return home for a doubleheader with the LHS boys against Milbank on Saturday, December 14.

The 2024-25 Lennox Orioles Girls Basketball roster includes the following athletes:

Seniors: Ryan Hanssen, Gavyn Herlyn, Lilly Meyer; Juniors: Holly Gillick, Mia Hanisch, Andie Peters, Izzy Vargas; Sophomores: Karlie Bosma, Kenzie Bosma, Jalyn Faulds, Peyton Herlyn, Sydney Johnson, Olivia Niederbaumer; Freshmen: Jayla DeCou, Libby Kranz, Teagen Sturm; and 8th Graders: Tori Gerdes, Adie McVey, and Bergan Musser.

With a balanced mix of experienced leaders and rising talent, the Orioles are poised to make their mark this season.
