LHS boys win Region Championship title; Emily Plucker sets new Region record


On Thursday, May 18 the Lennox High School boys’ track and field team claimed the Region 4A Championship title in Tea.

Highlights for the LHS boys included a Region individual title by Cloy McVey. McVey won the 1600 and took second in the 800 meter run. Cody Peterson was a double Region title holder, winning both the discus and shot put.

Lennox’s Layne Kuper also won two individual titles, one in the 110 meter hurdles and the other in the 300 meter hurdles.

Lennox boys’ 4x400 meter relay team of Ethan Larson, Cloy McVey, Cade Sherard, and Drake Mikkelsen captured the Region title with a time of 3:34.21.

For the girls, Emily Plucker not only claimed the Region Championship in the 800 meter run but she also set a new Meet record, with a time of 2:20.13 in the event.

Holly Gillick won the girls’ high jump, clearing 5’1” to capture the Region title.

In the 1600 meter run for the boys, McVey clocked a time of 4:33.21 to win the event. Noah Sayler took fourth (4:55.10). In the 800 meter run, McVey took second with a time of 2:01.5 in the event. Sherard took fourth (2:02.90).

In the shot put, Peterson won the title with a throw of 48’7”. Emery Lefers (43.5”) and Ethan Schoeder (42”) took fifth and sixth respectively.

Peterson won the discus with a throw of 141’.

Kuper brought home the Region title in the 110 meter hurdles, clocking a time of 15.78 seconds. Austin Strasser earned runner-up honors with a time of 15.82. Landon Slack (17.59) finished fifth.

In the 300 meter hurdles, Kuper clocked a 41.9 to win the event. Strasser took second (41.86) and Slack third (44.39).

Other highlights for the LHS boys included a second place finish by Mikkelsen in the 400 meter dash. Mikkelsen finished with a time of 53.16. Sherard took fourth (54.04) and Larson seventh (54.22).

In the 3200 meter run, Sayler took fourth place with a time of 11:04.21. Noah Wood captured sixth (12:12.21).

The boys’ 4x200 meter relay team of Teegan Musser, Cohen Metcalf, Ethan Larson, and Ashton Bach earned runner-up honors in the event at Regions with time of 1:33.50.

The 4x800 meter relay team of Mikkelsen, Sayler, Chett Jibben, and Joey Boysen earned second place with a time of 8:39.95 in the event.

The sprint medley relay team of Tate Gerdes, Trey Gerdes, Corban Hanneman, and Jibben took fourth (3:57.98).

In the high jump, Tate Gerdes and Layton Smith tied for second place honors, clearing 5’8”. Musser took fourth, clearing 5’8”.

Metcalf took second place in the boys’ long jump, jumping a distance of 20’8.25”. Kuper finished fourth (20’3”) and Braeden Wulf took seventh (19’3.5”).

Gerdes took second in the triple jump, with a jump of 41’7”.

Slack captured third place in the javelin throw, throwing a distance of 131’7”.

For the LHS girls, Karlie Bosma and Jayla DeCou went second and third respectively in the 400 meter dash. Bosma clocked a 1:02.14 and DeCou a 1:02.54.

DeCou placed third in the 200 meter dash (27.19) and fifth in the 100 meter dash (13.03). Bosma also placed in the 800 meter run, taking fourth (2:29.59).

In the 3200 meter run, Kelsey Schmidt earned runner-up honors with her time of 12:05.51 in the event.

The girls’ 4x200 meter relay team of Dani Highum, Gavyn Herlyn, Adelynn Timmermans, and Allison Dummer took fourth place (1:55.11).

The 4x400 meter relay team of Kenzie Bosma, Karlie Bosma, Emily Plucker, and Josephine Plucker, took third (4:24.01).

Lennox’s Addison Martz took sixth in the discus with a throw of 113’01”.

The LHS track and field athletes prepare for the State A Meet to be held at Howard Wood in Sioux Falls, beginning on Thursday, May 25 and continuing through Saturday, May 27.
