LHS boys’ tennis battles through season’s challenges, secures impressive wins along the way

On April 15 the Lennox High School boys’ tennis season started with matches in Sioux Falls against Mitchell and Sioux Falls Christian.  

The day started off against a strong Mitchell team where the varsity team couldn’t score an individual win and dropped the dual 0-9. Junior varsity also competed against the Kernels but dropped the dual too, however, they did score wins in singles from Atticus Larson, Duncan Johnson, Cam Smith Matthew Dummer and Chase Gervais and in doublers from the teams of Carter Beringer and Davin Cwach. 

Next up the Orioles took on a very strong Charger team. 

“The O’s competed better and had some good matches, but couldn’t secure a win and dropped the varsity dual 0-9,” said LHS head coach Kevin Plank. 

The Junior Varsity also competed and scored wins in singles from Chase Lundquist, Atticus Larson and Carter Beringer and secured wins in doubles from the teams of Ben Birk and Will Hoppe.  

On April 18 Lennox traveled to Harrisburg to take on the Tigers. The varsity squad played some competitive matches, but dropped the dual 0-9.  

The junior varsity squad also competed against the Tigers and had some competitive matches, but dropped the dual 10-16.  Wins were scored in singles from Noah Buhta and Grant Buhta and in doubles by the teams of Owen Boomgarden and Palmer Brue, Carter Beringer and Chase Gervais, Wyatt Crichton and Davin Cwach, Cian  Smith and Ben Birk, Easton Timmermans and Carter Beringer and Will Hoppe and Mitch Van Meeteren.

Next up the Orioles traveled Kuehn Park in Sioux Falls to take on Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Brandon Valley.  The O’s earned the first team win of the season against the Rough Riders by sweeping them 9-0.  Wins were scored in singles by Cody Plank, Gunnar Geiken, Eli Plank, Pierce Temme, Noah Welch, Alex Heibult, Connor Sherard and Mitch Van Meeteren. Double wins were earned by the teams of Plank and Plank, Temme and Geiken, Welch and Heibult and Van Meeteren and Sherard.

The team then took on another Class AA foe in Brandon Valley.  The team dropped the dual 2-7 and earned the wins by Eli Plank at Flight #3 singles and the duo of Temme and Geiken at flight #2 doubles.  Connor Sherard also earned a win at flight #8 singles.  

The team then traveled to Vermillion on April 23rd to take on the Tanagers and Yankton. The Orioles took care of Vermillion 8-1 with wins in singles by C. Plank, Geiken, E. Plank, Temme and Welch.  In doubles the teams of Plank and Plank, Geiken and Temme and Welch and Heibult all earned wins. Also earning singles and doubles wins are Van Meeteren, Sherard and Wyatt Holland, who partnered with Chase Lundquist at flight #5.  

The junior varsity squad earned a good win versus the Tanagers too by defeating them 19-7 in matches.  Singles wins were earned by Wesley Decker, N. Buhta, Johnson, Jan Montero, Timmermans, Beringer, Hoppe, Boomgarden, Brue, Dummer, Cwach and Chase Hazuka.  Doubles wins were earned by the teams of Larson and Hoppe, Decker and Montero, Cian Smith and Johnson, Boomgarden and Brue, Beringer and Dummer, Cwach and Crichton, and Hazuka and Cian Smith.

The Orioles then took on a strong Bucks team.  

“The team had some close matches and competed hard, but dropped the dual 1-8 with a strong win coming from Cody Plank at flight #1 singles against last season’s 4th place state finisher in class AA,” said Coach Plank. 

The duo of Holland and Lundquist also scored a win in doubles and Sherard scored a win in singles at flight #8. Junior varsity kept their competitive level up and had some great matches, but dropped the dual to the Bucks 4-10. Singles wins came from Beringer, Boomgarden, Brue and Cwach.
