LHS boys fall to Western Christian, earn win over Vermillion

On Thursday, Jan. 16 the Lennox High School boys’ basketball team traveled to Vermillion and earned a decisive 58-36 win over the Tanagers, handing them just their second loss of the season. 

With the win, Lennox improves to 7-2 on the season. 

“The boys came ready to play from the jump in this game. We had things that we needed to get better at after being exposed a little bit in the Western Christian game and the boys had an open mind to get better and it showed in this game,” said LHS head coach Jacob Hinker. “I was proud of the boys’ toughness and togetherness in this game.”

Against Vermillion, Boston Katzer led the team, earning a double-double on the night. Katzer scored 23 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, and had one assist and one steal. 

Aiden Hanssen finished with 13 points, hitting three of four from downtown. He also had two rebounds in the game. Teegan Musser finished with six points, three rebounds, and two assists. 

Cole Spieler finished with five points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Tate Gerdes had four points, eight rebounds, and a team high nine assists. Talen Eich finished with three points, two rebounds, and two assists. Layton Smith finished with two points, seven rebounds, and one assist. Drake Mikkelsen also had two points, grabbed three rebounds, had one assist, and one steal. 

Prior to the game against Vermillion, the LHS boys hosted Western Christian on Jan. 14. Western Christian, one of the top teams in Iowa, came in with a 9-2 record and despite, Lennox leading after the opening quarter, Western Christian took the 63-47 victory. 

“Western Christian is the #2 team in Class 2A in Iowa and they showed that when they came in and played us. This is a good game for us to have on our schedule to challenge our boys,” said Hinker. “They challenged us from the jump and it was a good game for us to reflect on and use to get better.”

Leading the team against Western Christian was Gerdes who finished with 17 points. Gerdes also had five rebounds and two assists. Katzer finished with ten points, one rebound, one assist, and one steal. Musser finished with six points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Smith provided four points, five rebounds, and one assist. Hanssen and Eich each had three points. Cade Sherard and Mikkelsen finished with two points each. 

The Orioles will host West Central on Thursday, Jan. 23 in an 8 p.m. match-up. They will compete at the Hanson Classic on Saturday, Jan. 25 taking on Clark Willow Lake at 4 p.m. at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
