The Lennox High School boys’ basketball earned two impressive victories, defeating Pine Ridge on Dec. 30 and Canton on Jan. 2.
On Monday, Dec. 30, the Orioles faced off against Pine Ridge at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, pulling off a nail-biting 61-60 victory.
Head coach Jacob Hinker reflected on the game, saying, “We came out a little bit flat in this game, but fought back against a good Pine Ridge team. It was good to see the boys have a little bit of adversity and learn how to win a game in which we didn’t play our best basketball from the start of the game to the finish. We get to play them again in February, and I am eager to see how much we have improved up to that point.”
Layton Smith and Tate Gerdes led the Orioles’ charge. Gerdes finished with 15 points, three rebounds, and three assists, while Smith added 14 points, including two three-pointers, along with four rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Aiden Hanssen contributed 12 points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal, while Boston Katzer secured a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, along with four assists and one steal. Cole Spieler rounded out the effort with five points, two rebounds, and two steals, and Teegan Musser added four points, three rebounds, and three assists.
The Orioles returned to the court on Thursday, January 2, dominating Canton at home with an impressive 90-23 victory.
Coach Hinker praised his team’s performance, stating, “It was good to see every player on the roster get in the box score and get varsity minutes during a home game. We had some fun moments throughout the game with multiple players getting their first varsity dunks. We will look to continue to build off this game.”
Hanssen led the offensive effort with 18 points, three rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Musser recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Smith and Talen Eich each scored 10 points; Smith added seven rebounds, three assists, and one steal, while Eich contributed two rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Gerdes had eight points, six rebounds, three assists, and four steals, and Drake Mikkelsen added eight points, nine rebounds, and one assist.
Eli Plank chipped in five points, one assist, and one steal, while Katzer, Cade Sherard, and Jevyn Lefers each scored four points. Katzer also tallied one rebound and a team-high six assists, Sherard added five rebounds and one assist, and Lefers contributed one rebound. Jaxson Bittner scored three points and grabbed one steal, and Brennen Juffer rounded out the scoring with two points, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
