Lennox to host American Jr. Legion State B Tournament this weekend



The Lennox Jr. Legion Post 174 baseball team competed in Region action last week at Augustana. Lennox defeated Sioux Falls Christian, 11-3 and Clark/Willow Lake, 6-1, before falling to Sioux Falls Christian, 6-2, in a rematch. Sioux Falls Christian claimed the SE Championship title, giving runner up honors to Lennox.

Both teams will compete at the 2023 State B’s scheduled to be held this Friday, Aug. 4 through Sunday, Aug. 6 at Lennox.

Games begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 4 with Elk Point Jefferson Post 134 taking on Winner/Colome Post 169. The two are set to square off at 10 a.m. Thirty minutes following Game 1, Belle Fourche Post 32 will take on W.I.N. Post 137. Thirty minutes following Game 2, Groton Post 39 vs. Sioux Falls Christian Post 911. Then at 6 p.m. Friday evening, Lennox Post 174 will take on Martin Post 240. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.

Games continue on Saturday, Aug. 5, with the first game slated to begin at 10 a.m. Action begins on Sunday, Aug. 6 with the first game at 12:30 p.m. All tournament games are seven innings, unless stopped by the 10-run rule. A complete bracket can be found on page 2.

In Region action, Lennox’s first match-up against Sioux Falls Christian featured Lennox jumping out to an early lead and never looking back as they earned the 11-3 victory in 6-1/2 innings of play on Monday, July 24.

Cullen Wright and Talen Eich each collected three hits in four at bats to lead the offense for Post 174.

Dayne Moeller tripled in the opening inning, scoring two runs, to help set the tone for Lennox.

Lennox added to their early lead in the bottom of the second inning after Gabe Veurink singled, Jackson Anacker doubled, and Talen Eich doubled, each scoring one run.

In the bottom of the third inning, Wright singled, and Lennox scored on a wild pitch.

Eich struck out 12 batters on the day. The right-handed pitcher also gave up three hits and three runs over five and two-thirds innings while walking five. Anacker pitched one and one-third innings of zero-run ball for Lennox in relief. The reliever surrendered zero hits, striking out three and walking one.

Lennox accumulated 15 hits in the game. Eich, Wright, Anacker, Landon Atkins, and Moeller each collected multiple hits for Lennox. Atkins stole three bases.

Play continued for Lennox on Tuesday, July 25 as they defeated Clark/Willow Lake 6-1.

Lennox got on the board in the second inning after Ramsey Williams drew a walk, scoring one run. They added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Eich doubled, and Wright singled, each scoring one run.

Mason Reischl led things off on the mound for Lennox. The right-handed pitcher gave up three hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out four and walking two. Moeller appeared in relief for Lennox. He allowed one hit, one run and recorded two strike-outs.

Eich provided the pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Lennox with three runs batted in. He went 2-for-3 on the day from the plate. As a team, Lennox had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating nine walks for the game. Tyler Strasser and Moeller led the team with two walks each. Moeller stole two bases.

Lennox had a rematch against Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, July 25, but this time Lennox fell 6-2.

Anacker started on the mound for Lennox. He allowed six hits and five runs (four earned) over six and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and walking twoVeurink, Reischl, Anacker, and Atkins each collected one hit for Lennox.
