Lennox hosts speech and debate tournament

The Lennox speech and debate team hosted a tournament this past Saturday, Dec. 9. Several students had success at the tournament.

Placing in the top six for speech events were Madix Havard who placed fifth in novice extemp, Tiegen Black who placed fifth and Maddigan Van Sickle who placed second  in novice informative.

Danielyn Tammen placed fourth in novice oratory, Gavin Swier placed second in varsity informative, and Gunnar Gieken placed second in varsity extemp.

“In debate we had several debaters with a strong 2-2 record,” said Coach Michael Larson.

Those debaters included McKenzie Rittenour in varsity LD, Madix Havard and Mykah Husman in novice PF, Maddigan VanSickle and Danielyn Tammen in novice PF and Alec Gates and Emersen Lee in novice PF.

Ninety-three students from thirteen schools competed in speech and debate events.

While the school has hosted speech and debate conference tournaments before, this is the first time it has been an invitational as the sole host.

“Thanks to the work of the students, the parents that donated items and helped with concessions, the willingness of the staff to use rooms, the help of Assistant Brady Jandl, and the schools that came down, the tournament was considered a success,” said Larson.

The next competition for the team will be at Brookings December 15-16.
