Lennox girls’ and boys’ cross country teams advance to State

The Lennox High School cross country team traveled to Elk Point Jefferson on Thursday, Oct. 17, to compete in the Region 3A Meet, and despite extremely windy conditions, both the varsity girls and boys teams achieved impressive results. The varsity girls captured first place as a team, while the varsity boys finished second, qualifying both teams for the State A Meet, which will be held in Rapid City this Saturday, Oct. 26.

In the girls’ 5000-meter varsity race, senior Kelsey Schmidt led the team with a third-place finish, clocking a time of 18:56.36. Eighth-grader Adie McVey followed closely, placing fifth with a personal record of 19:04.07. Other notable performances included Natalie Aesoph, who took eighth place with a time of 20:02.57, seventh-grader Sophia Johnson, who finished 15th in 21:08.13, Kamille Schmidt, an eighth-grader, who secured 17th with a time of 21:15.93, and Lucy Carlson, an eighth-grader who also finished in the top 20, taking 20th with a time of 21:24.97. 

The boys’ 5000-meter varsity race saw Noah Sayler, a senior, finish fourth with a personal record of 17:02.12, followed by junior Cloy McVey in fifth place, posting a time of 17:12.04. Senior Maverick Horst took 10th place with a time of 17:43.38, while fellow senior Chett Jibben achieved a personal best of 17:49.17, finishing 12th. Eighth-grader Landon Strasser also had a strong race with a 15th place finish, completing the race in 18:06.40. Senior Cade Sherard captured 21st place with his time of 18:27.38. 

In the junior varsity races, the Lennox athletes continued to excel. In the girls’ 4000-meter race, eighth-grader Allison Loewe took first place with a time of 17:35.40, followed by junior Josephine Plucker in second place with a personal record of 18:15.28. Harper Walsh took 14th (19:45.02), Kaydence Gerry 15th (20:01.04), Jenna Duncan 19th (20:12.47), Adalynn Nielson 21st (20:34.38), Lily Kuiken 25th (21:22.90), Graycee Postma 30th (21:49.17), and Ashley Dummer 46th (27:20.28). 

The boys’ 4000-meter race saw ninth-grader Isaak Booker claim victory, finishing in 15:10.48, with sophomore Andrew Stensaas coming in second with a season-best time of 15:36.92. Jackson Schmidt earned fourth place with a time of 15:55.73 and Leo Aesoph came in fifth with a time of 16:01.45). 

Others competing included Cade Aasheim 11th (16:35.95): Duncan Johnson 14th (16:56.79); Jack Aasheim 15th (16:57.38); Lance Aasheim 19th (17:06.14); Isaiah Sayler 25th (17:45.41); Keegan Vander Plaats 54th (20:05.39); Levi Hickey 56th (20:14.57); Greyson Seeman 58th (20:14.84); and Karson Iken 65th (21:42.03). 

The State Meet will be held at Rapid City at Hart Ranch Camping Resort with all classes competing. Class B girls will begin at 12noon followed by the Class A girls at approximately 12:30 p.m.; the Class AA girls at 1 p.m.; the Class B boys at 1:30 p.m.; the Class A boys at 2 p.m. and the Class AA boys at 2:30 p.m. Awards will follow the conclusion of the final race. 

Medals are awarded to the top 25 individual runners in each class and medals are given tot he top six teams in each class. Trophies are awarded to champion and runner-up teams and plaques to third, fourth, fifth and sixth place teams.
