City continues discussion on prison sewer plan

The Lennox City Council met Tuesday, October 15 in the Lennox boardroom. With all members present, the Council heard agenda items including

The first item on the agenda was a City of Lennox sewer connection update as the City of Lennox and South Dakota Department of Corrections (DOC) are discussing a possible connection of the new men’s prison South of Harrisburg to the Lennox Wastewater Treatment Facility.

“Not a lot to share tonight, our discussions with the Department of Corrections have continued. We’ve been working on a possible agreement should we get to that point. Sayre has found the idea to be feasible so now we’re at a really good point where the DOC needs to decide whether to move forward with that idea or not,” City Administrator, Nate Vander Plaats said.

The City Council directed Vander Plaats to draft an ordinance allowing the discharge of fireworks in Lennox. Vander Plaats has completed the draft and is ready for the first reading.

“Fire, EMS, and the police committee have discussed it at two separate meetings and the result of both meetings is the ordinance in front of you,” Vander Plaats said.

The ordinance was adjusted slightly to allow more discretion on the part of the fire department to suspend the discharge of fireworks in dry conditions under the recommendation of the fire chief. Motion to approve the first reading was made. Motion carried.

The City Council has asked staff to study the possibility of annexing properties currently outside of the municipal boundary but receiving municipal utilities.
